How to Prepare for Thanksgiving: The Best Chevy Vehicles for Holiday Hauling in Overland Park, KS

November 06, 2026 · 6 min read

Get Thanksgiving Ready With the Right Chevy

Thanksgiving is all about good food, family, and spending time together—but getting ready for the big meal can involve a lot of errands! Between grocery shopping, picking up ingredients, transporting side dishes, and bringing everything to the family gathering, having enough room in your vehicle can make holiday prep easier.
If you're preparing for Thanksgiving in Overland Park, KS, McCarthy Chevrolet Overland Park can help you explore Chevrolet vehicles with the cargo space you need for your holiday plans.
From a spacious SUV for grocery runs to a full-size truck for hauling larger items, here's how to prepare for Thanksgiving and which Chevy models are worth considering.

5 Tips for Preparing Your Vehicle for Thanksgiving

Before loading up your vehicle with groceries and holiday essentials, take a few minutes to get organized.

1. Make Your Thanksgiving Shopping List Early

Planning your menu ahead of time can help you avoid multiple trips to the grocery store. Separate your list into categories such as produce, refrigerated items, pantry staples, beverages, and baking supplies.
Remember to leave room for bulky items like bags of potatoes, beverage cases, large roasting pans, and your Thanksgiving turkey.

2. Plan Your Grocery Runs

Try to purchase shelf-stable ingredients before the busiest shopping days. Save perishable items for closer to Thanksgiving, and use insulated bags or coolers for refrigerated and frozen groceries during longer trips.
Keep raw meat and poultry securely packaged and separate from ready-to-eat foods.

3. Clear Out Your Cargo Area

Remove unnecessary items from your trunk or cargo area before shopping. A few minutes of cleaning can create extra space for grocery bags, serving dishes, and holiday supplies.
If you're using an SUV, check whether folding down the rear seats will give you the additional room you need without leaving passengers without a seat.

4. Secure Your Thanksgiving Haul

Place heavier grocery bags low in the cargo area and prevent items from rolling around. Keep fragile desserts and serving dishes level, and avoid stacking groceries so high that they block your view.
Always secure cargo properly and keep it away from airbags and other safety equipment.

5. Check Your Vehicle Before Traveling

If you're driving to visit family for Thanksgiving, check your tire pressure, windshield wipers, headlights, and fluid levels before leaving. Allow extra travel time for traffic and changing fall weather conditions around the Kansas City metro.

Which Chevy Has Enough Room for Thanksgiving?

Not every Thanksgiving trip requires a massive SUV. The best vehicle depends on how much you're carrying, how many passengers are traveling with you, and whether you need room for both.
Here are four Chevrolet models worth considering.

Chevy Equinox: Great for Everyday Grocery Runs

The Chevrolet Equinox is a practical choice for drivers who want a comfortable SUV for everyday errands and smaller holiday shopping trips.
With up to 63.5 cubic feet of cargo volume in the 2026 model, the Equinox offers room for grocery bags, pantry staples, baking supplies, and smaller serving dishes when configured for maximum cargo space.
Why consider the Equinox for Thanksgiving?

A useful cargo area for routine grocery shopping
Seating for up to five people
A versatile rear cargo area for bags and supplies
A convenient size for everyday driving around Overland Park

The Equinox is worth considering if you're bringing a few dishes to dinner or handling most of the holiday shopping yourself.

Chevy Blazer: Extra Room for Holiday Errands

Need a little more flexibility for groceries and family travel? The Chevrolet Blazer offers up to 64.2 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume in the 2026 model.
Its five-passenger layout makes it a good option for drivers who want room for family members alongside holiday essentials.
Why consider the Blazer for Thanksgiving?

Up to 64.2 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume
Seating for five passengers
Flexible space for groceries, kitchen supplies, and luggage
A spacious alternative for holiday travel and everyday errands

If your Thanksgiving plans include shopping, visiting relatives, and bringing along a few favorite dishes, the Blazer is worth checking out.

Chevy Traverse: Room for Family and Food

If you're hosting Thanksgiving or bringing food for a large gathering, the Chevrolet Traverse deserves a spot on your list.
The 2026 Traverse offers up to 98 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume with the second- and third-row seats folded flat. It can also seat up to eight passengers when equipped with the available second-row bench seat.
Why consider the Traverse for Thanksgiving?

Up to 98 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume
Available seating for up to eight
Flexible seating arrangements for passengers and cargo
Plenty of versatility for grocery runs, luggage, and family trips

The Traverse is a strong option for families who need a balance of passenger space and cargo flexibility. Just remember that carrying more passengers reduces the room available for holiday supplies.

Chevy Tahoe: Go Big for Thanksgiving

For drivers who need substantial cargo space and room for a larger group, the Chevrolet Tahoe is another option to explore.
The 2026 Tahoe offers up to 122.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume and seating for up to nine, depending on configuration.
Why consider the Tahoe for Thanksgiving?

Up to 122.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume
Available seating for up to nine
Flexible space for larger shopping trips and family travel
A full-size SUV option for households with bigger holiday plans

The Tahoe is worth considering if you're transporting multiple passengers along with luggage, groceries, and other holiday essentials. For maximum cargo space, the rear seats must be folded, so consider your passenger needs before loading up.
Cargo figures represent maximum manufacturer-listed capacity with the appropriate seats folded. Actual usable space depends on seating configuration, passenger count, and the size and shape of your items.

Don't Forget the Thanksgiving Essentials

Before heading to the store or your family's Thanksgiving gathering, double-check that you've packed everything you need.

Turkey or main dish
Ingredients for side dishes
Desserts and baking supplies
Drinks and ice
Serving platters and utensils
Food storage containers for leftovers
Insulated bags for refrigerated foods
Napkins, plates, and other holiday supplies

If you're transporting a cooked turkey or hot side dishes, use appropriate insulated carriers and keep food at safe temperatures. Secure containers to prevent spills during the drive.

Which Chevy Trim Level Is Right for You? Shopping for a new Chevrolet involves more than choosing a model. You'll also need to decide which trim level fits your needs. From everyday essentials and smartphone connectivity to premium comfort features and advanced driver-assistance technology, each trim can offer a different combination of equipment. If you're shopping for a new Chevy in Overland Park, KS, understanding trim levels can help you compare vehicles and decide which features are worth prioritizing. At McCarthy Chevrolet Overland Park, you can explore different Chevrolet models and compare the technology, convenience, and styling options available. What Is a Chevy Trim Level? Chevy Trax Trim Levels: Technology in a Compact SUV The Chevrolet Trax is a compact SUV that offers several trim levels, making it easy to compare everyday practicality with sportier styling. Trax LS — Everyday Essentials The LS is the entry-level Trax trim, but it still includes useful technology for everyday driving. Depending on configuration, technology and convenience features can include smartphone connectivity, a touchscreen infotainment system, and driver-information displays. Silverado Custom — Added Style & Convenience The Custom trim adds visual upgrades and convenience features over the WT. Silverado LT — More Connected Driving The LT adds technology and comfort features that make the Silverado appealing for daily driving as well as truck duties. Depending on configuration, features can include a larger infotainment display, a digital driver-information display, and additional available connectivity options. What Technology Features Should You Compare? When deciding between Chevrolet trim levels, look beyond the trim name and compare the specific features included. Here are some of the most useful features to consider: Infotainment touchscreen: A larger display can make it easier to access compatible apps, audio, and vehicle settings. Digital driver display: A driver-information screen can make important vehicle information easier to view. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: Check whether wireless smartphone connectivity is included on the specific model. Google built-in: Available on select Chevrolet vehicles, it can provide access to Google Maps, compatible apps, and voice assistance. Wireless phone charging: Available on select models and trims, this can help keep a compatible phone charged without a cable. Remote start: Convenient for preparing your vehicle before a drive, where equipped. Driver-assistance technology: Compare available features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, and HD Surround Vision. Not every feature is standard across the Chevrolet lineup. Some require a higher trim, an optional package, or specific equipment. Which Chevy Trim Level Offers the Best Value? The best trim depends on which features you'll actually use. For everyday driving: Start with the LS or LT trims and compare their standard technology and comfort features. For sporty styling: Look at RS trims for distinctive exterior and interior details. For adventure-inspired design: Compare ACTIV trims on eligible SUVs. For premium comfort: Explore higher trims such as the Silverado LTZ and High Country. For work and capability: Compare Silverado WT and other truck configurations based on your towing, hauling, and equipment needs. A higher trim isn't automatically the right choice for every driver.
