When to Replace Your Windshield Wipers + DIY Installation Guide | Chevy Overland Park Service & Parts

May 02, 2026 · 3 min read

If you’re driving around Overland Park, Kansas City, Olathe, or Lee’s Summit, clear visibility isn’t optional—it’s essential. From sudden Midwest rainstorms to winter snow and road spray, your windshield wipers play a huge role in keeping you safe.

At McCarthy Chevy Overland Park, we help drivers stay prepared with expert service, quality parts, and easy solutions—even if you want to handle it yourself.

When Should You Replace Your Windshield Wipers?

Most wiper blades should be replaced every:

6–12 months

However, Kansas City weather can wear them out faster. Keep an eye out for these signs:

🚨 Streaking on the windshield

If your wipers leave lines or miss spots, the rubber may be worn.

🚨 Squeaking or chattering

Noisy wipers often mean the blades aren’t making proper contact.

🚨 Skipping or uneven movement

This can reduce visibility during rain or snow.

🚨 Cracked or split rubber

Heat and cold can cause blades to dry out and break down.

If you notice any of these, it’s time for a replacement.

Why Replacing Wipers Matters

Worn-out wipers can:

Reduce visibility in rain or snow
Increase driving risk
Strain your wiper motor
Make everyday driving more stressful

For drivers in Overland Park and the KC metro, where weather can change quickly, fresh wipers are a simple but important safety upgrade.

DIY: How to Change Your Windshield Wipers

Good news—replacing your wipers is quick and easy. Most drivers can do it in just a few minutes.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Lift the wiper arm
Gently pull the wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays upright.

2. Remove the old blade
Locate the small tab or clip where the blade connects. Press or unhook it, then slide the blade off.

3. Attach the new blade
Slide the new wiper blade into place until you hear a “click.”

4. Lower the arm carefully
Gently place the wiper arm back onto the windshield—don’t let it snap down.

That’s it—you’re done!
