Omaha, NE
Omaha is the closest of the destination cities mentioned here, so it can be great for either a short visit over a weekend or a day trip, depending on what you want to do. You could visit the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, which is one of the top zoos in the nation. If you prefer museums, there’s El Museo Latino, which chronicles Latino history in the Midwest, and the Joslyn Art Museum, which houses tons of beautiful pieces of art in gorgeous pink marble buildings. Omaha also has multiple historic neighborhoods, such as Blackstone, Dundee, and Aksarben Village, if you prefer to wander around rather than visit one particular site.

This destination is just across the state of Missouri from Kansas City, and you can get there pretty directly via I-70. One of the best places to visit is Forest Park, and not just because it has walking and biking trails, golf courses, and tennis courts. Forest Park is also home to multiple museums and other venues, such as the St. Louis Zoo, and they all have free general admission for the public. That means you could visit the Zoo, the Science Center, the Missouri History Museum, and more without having to pull out your wallet. Because of this and other factors, such as St. Louis’s low-cost of living, this midsize city makes for a great inexpensive road trip destination.

Springfield, IL

Springfield, IL is a bit smaller than the other destination cities described here, but while it’s smaller in size, it’s big on history. It has multiple sites dedicated to the life and history of Abraham Lincoln, such as the Abraham Lincoln Library & Museum, Lincoln’s Tomb, and the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. You can also explore Illinois state history in places like the Illinois State Museum. There are plenty of other sites and attractions that cover other parts of history, as well.

Oklahoma City, OK
Oklahoma City is so much more than the capital city of Oklahoma. It has undergone a recent rebirth that has allowed lots of wonderful restaurants to emerge, so great food is always nearby when you visit this city. If you want to explore that element of the city, Bricktown is a great place to start, with its nightlife and eateries. Oklahoma City also has plenty of interesting sites to see, such as the Myriad Botanical Garden and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.
