When you want to get a new vehicle, it might not always be a completely new vehicle. That’s because when you start shopping for a car, truck, or SUV, you have three main options for vehicle types: new vehicles, used vehicles, and Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicles. But which one is the right option for you, and how will you know? Well, you can figure that out and decide for yourself once you have the basic facts of purchasing each vehicle type. Let’s lay them out for you.
How the Three Vehicle Types Differ from Each Other
New Vehicles
New vehicles are, of course, new. They’re bright and shiny and usually have few miles on them (but they might have some due to customers test driving them). Of the three types of vehicles listed here, they’re least likely to develop mechanical problems. However, that means they’re also usually the most expensive of these three vehicle types. But new vehicles do come in a range of price points, so you may be able to find a new car, truck, or SUV that fits your budget. You can also trade your current vehicle in and get credit towards a new vehicle.
Pros: High quality, the latest tech and safety, low interest rates
Cons: Higher prices
Used Vehicles
Used vehicles are, in some ways, the opposite of new vehicles. These vehicles have been owned at least once and often have more than a few miles on them, though the exact amounts of miles on them can vary. They’re usually sold at lower prices than new vehicles, with some selling for $15,000 or less. But because they’ve been owned before, these vehicles may have developed problems, and those problems usually don’t appear until after you have bought them. While you may save money on the initial price of a used car, you should probably be prepared to spend money on repairs in case your used vehicle needs them.
Pros: Affordable prices, low monthly payments, wide selection
Cons: Potential mechanical problems
Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles
Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are between new and used vehicles. They’re not brand new, but they’re often less than ten years old and less expensive than new vehicles. They have some miles on them, but not quite as many as a lot of used vehicles out there have on them. They’re also much less likely to develop major mechanical problems because dealerships’ staff inspect every CPO vehicle they take on. For example, at McCarthy Chevrolet of Overland Park, we put our CPO vehicles through a 182-point inspection. This inspection process allows us to certify that those used vehicles are safe and will last for thousands of miles. That way, you know you’re getting a quality used vehicle that you can rely on for at least a few years.
Pros: Lower prices than new, higher quality than used, extended warranty benefits
Cons: Not completely new
